Maisa beat all of her basketball teammates in Knockout at the end of tonight’s practice. Her prize: This championship belt resides at our house till the next practice.
I like to think that my Dad would have been like Carl Erskine, sharing his basketball with a black kid when no one else would.
I always got the sense that Dad was non-judgmental of people who looked or acted different. If he had prejudices, he certainly never verbalized them.
It’s clear that Carl Erskine was the same way. Erskine was an ace pitcher on those powerhouse Dodgers teams of the 1950s. He was an ace human being, too. The link below tells that story.
Maisa played her first-ever volleyball games on Saturday. She’s picking up the game better than I would have anticipated. She had some strong serves and some nice bumps/digs. Her team went 1-2 on the day.
Today it was basketball, and her team went 1-1. Maisa had her best game of the season in the victory, scoring seven points (including a free throw!) while adding some rebounds, defense and hustle.
Here’s her basketball team photo.
Spent a good chunk of my teenage years listening to songs like this one on the back roads of Bernard, Rickardsville, Placid and New Vienna.
