1-3 at 10A state tournament

The Diablas won one of their four games this weekend at the 10A state tournament.

The Diablas are a 10B team, so we were happy to win one game if I’m being honest. 10A is the best of the best (all-star teams, essentially).

Maisa pitched a gem in the victory Saturday. Five innings, five hits, six strikeouts and no walks to beat a strong Pleasant Valley team 8-2. She earned game MVP honors. The second batter of the game drilled an over-the-fence home run but Maisa quickly rebounded and allowed just one run the rest of the game.

A team from Dubuque beat us on Saturday night. They were solid in all phases of the game. Being from Dubuque County, I can’t say I’m surprised. They ran the bases and bunted exceptionally well. Their pitchers pounded the strike zone. They were strong defensively.

Dubuque’s cleanup hitter is the daughter of Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Famer (and huge Dodger fan) Jason Simon, who I used to run into at beer parties a lifetime ago. Jason is a member of the legendary Simon baseball family from Cascade, all of whom were highly skilled players — and all of whom cheer for the Dodgers!

Have rabbit ears? Don’t be an umpire.

Justin Turner got ejected for nothing tonight. Unbelievable. One of our best players, gone.

Umpires, from little league to the majors, need to take a chill pill and realize that people are going to disagree with your calls once in a while. That’s baseball/softball.

As long as comments from the dugout don’t get out of control, you ignore them and move on. Umpires need thick skin and small ears. Be a pro.
