April Jaguar Jamboree

Each month, Northwest Elementary selects one student from each classroom for the Jaguar Jamboree.

The event is a celebration of students who do a great job following the big three — safe, respectful and responsible.

The students and their parents gather for breakfast in the Northwest cafeteria before school. Maisa and the other kids in this photo were honored this month.

There’s magic out there in center field

Maisa and I stopped at the Field of Dreams on the way home from Gramma Kramer’s house today. It was the 30th anniversary of the film’s premiere (April 21, 1989) — a very special day to visit the Field.

Maisa has always been fascinated by the Ghosts disappearing into the center-field corn. So today she wanted to walk out into that corn field (which is still just stalks on the ground from last year’s harvest).

She walked WAY out there. Finally I shouted for her to turn around. At that moment, I checked my phone for an update on the Dodger game. Cody Bellinger had just hit a ninth-inning home run to take the lead — at precisely the same time Maisa started walking in that magical corn field.

Bellinger’s heroic blast came against Milwaukee’s Josh Hader, the best relief pitcher in baseball. And it came just after the Dodgers had blown a three-run lead in the eighth.

Things did not look good for the Dodgers. Two outs, two strikes, and Hader had allowed a home run to only one left-handed batter in his career.

The Dodgers were in trouble. Right up to the point when Maisa paid a visit to the Ghosts in the corn. And then Bellinger unleashed a mighty swing.

I believe in the magic of the Field of Dreams.

Good guys beat the bad guy

Beating bad guy Josh Hader tonight was one of the most satisfying Dodger victories of the last 10 years.

Kike’s three-run blast was the difference in the game.

Thank goodness for Kike.

Kids are so much smarter these days

I never used “in which” correctly in a sentence until I was in college. Today Maisa sent me this message…

“Today our grade had a book sale in which we got to pick out as many books as we wanted! I got a good amount and now my bag is full and heavy!!!!”

Sharm is a goodwill ambassador

Farley’s Paul Scherrman, my baseball hero, frequently travels to Puerto Rico to deliver baseball equipment to underprivileged kids. He also conducts baseball clinics for the kids.
