15 points in a row

We trailed 14-5 in the third set in the last match of pool play Saturday. Lose and we go home. Jill and I started gathering our things.

And then it was Maisa’s turn to serve. And all she did was rattle off 15 consecutive points to give us a 20-14 lead. Incredible!

A few moments later we finished off the match and qualified for bracket play.

By the end of the afternoon, the girls had championship medals to take home. 👍

Remembering Don Newcombe, 1956 National League MVP

Sad to hear about Don Newcombe’s passing. A Dodgers icon and a great champion.

Newk was one of the best pitchers in Dodgers history. He was employed by the team right up until his death.

The Bible of Baseball

I remember visiting brother Steve at Loras College in about 1984. I spent the whole afternoon poring over Steve’s impressive stack of Sporting News issues. I was in heaven.

It wasn’t long after that day that I had my own subscription, which I kept for years. And yes, it was a great feeling to see TSN in the mailbox on Friday.

Campy’s wisdom

“You have to be a man to play baseball for a living, but you have to have a lot of little boy in you, too.”

— Roy Campanella, Dodgers Hall of Famer, three-time National League MVP
