We see the movie through the same set of eyes

Maisa and I watched “Field of Dreams” last night. I’ve seen it 100 times, Maisa five times.

This morning, I asked Maisa to list her three favorite scenes. Her choices match up precisely with mine.

3. Terrance Mann’s “People will come” speech

2. Archie Graham becomes Doc Graham to save Karin, ending his stint as a baseball player.

1. Ray and his Dad have a catch as the cars come rolling into the farm.

What’s amazing is that all three of those scenes occur in the story’s final 15 minutes. Has any other movie packed that much drama and emotion into such a small slice of film?

This poll makes me happy

I’ve always said that one of the best things about being a Dodgers fan in Iowa is how unique and exceptional that is.

I embrace the fact that virtually nobody else in the Midwest roots for Dem Bums.

I have some non-conformist DNA running through my veins (probably my Irish blood). Always have.

So it gives me a great sense of pride to go against the grain and live and die with the Boys in Blue.

It’s me against the world, being a Dodgers fan in a Cubs-Twins-Cardinals state.

Check that — it’s me and Jill and Maisa and Hub against the world. 😀⚾️👍

Packed house at Drake women’s game

It was a lot of fun being part of a huge crowd for Drake’s women’s basketball victory over Northern Iowa on Friday night.

Special thanks to the Rauen family for joining us, to Mike B. for the tickets, and to the Des Moines police officer for taking this photo.

Added bonus was seeing Western Dubuque grads Megan Maahs and Rose Simon-Ressler play for UNI.

Maahs (Wattuse’s daughter) is just a freshman and plays at a high level. She’s gonna be a star in the Missouri Valley.

2. Focus on the positives in life

3. Tomorrow’s a new day

4. There’s always something to look forward to

5. Life’s too short, so let’s be happy
