RIP Ralph Branca

Ralph Branca was a good man — a devout Catholic and a class act all the way around.

He was also a very good pitcher on some GREAT Dodger teams of the 1940s and ’50s.

I read Branca’s autobiography “A Moment in Time” a few years ago and enjoyed it very, very much. I would recommend it to any Dodger fan (or any baseball fan, for that matter).

“I was closer to Ralph than to any other Dodger. We traveled around the world and became very good friends,” retired Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully said.

“He carried the cross of the Thomson home run with dignity and grace. I was grateful for his friendship and I grieve at his death. He was a great man.”

Left Arm of God succumbed to injuries

Today in 1966, the great Sandy Koufax announces his retirement at age 30.

Koufax was the greatest left-handed pitcher in the history of baseball. He was a member of four Dodger world championship teams, and six National League championship teams.
