What’s my favorite thing about college basketball?

The length of the games.

Almost every contest is completed in two hours, give or take 10 minutes.

Searching for some work-life balance

The last five weeks have been stressful at work. My work-life balance has been all out of whack.

But this past weekend was good. And today wasn’t bad either.

I measure quality of life by the number of minutes I spend reading books with Maisa or getting down on the floor to play games with her. The last three days have been happy days.

Red, blue and purple

I enjoyed this graphic in today’s Register — Iowa’s most Republican (red), Democratic (blue) and down-the-middle (purple) towns and counties.

Dubuque County ranks fifth in the “most Democratic” category. Lots of Kennedy-loving Irish/German Catholic Democrats in Iowa’s oldest city and surrounding towns.

The most evenly-divided town in Iowa? Wyoming in Jones County. 152 Republicans, 152 Democrats.

Here’s the full report.

I agree with Randy Pete on this one

Iowa State has tons of smart people on its campus. One of them needs to realize that it’s time to use some common sense.

RIP Glenn Frey

Glenn Frey, co-founder of the Eagles and one of the world’s most successful musicians, died yesterday at 67.

Simply put, the Eagles are America’s greatest band. They blow everyone else away when it comes to record sales. “Take It Easy,” “Take It to the Limit” and “Hotel California” are among the most iconic songs ever produced.

I bought the Eagles’ Greatest Hits Volumes I and II when I was in high school, and since then I’ve spent thousands of hours in my car listening to their music. Their talent was out-of-this-world.

Frey sang lead vocals on “Take It Easy,” “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “Already Gone,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “New Kid in Town,” and “Heartache Tonight.” Here are my two favorites:

Frey was a big sports fan and, living in Los Angeles all those years, certainly no stranger to Dodger Stadium, the Fabulous Forum and Staples Center. Here’s a video clip of Frey helping Vin Scully call a Dodger game back in 1985.
