Saving some calories and some money

You don’t realize how expensive food is these days until you go on a diet.

If I can stick to my healthy eating, I figure I’ll save $100 a month.

Surprise, surprise

My latest weight-loss scheme — I’m not eating sweets, I’m not eating seconds and I’m not stepping on the scale.

That’s right: I’m going to try to eat healthy until April 1st (start of baseball season) and then step on the scale for the first time since last Monday.

The number I see will be either a nice surprise or a bitter disappointment.

I watched a PBS special on J.D. Salinger last night. The documentary about the “Catcher in the Rye” author was extremely well done. It was two and a half hours long and it left me wanting more. Very interesting subject.

James Earl Jones’ character in “Field of Dreams,” Terrance Mann, was based on Salinger’s life. In the book version of “Field of Dreams,” entitled “Shoeless Joe” by W.P. Kinsella, Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella travels to the East Coast to find Salinger.

Two 1970s powerhouses — Elton John and the Dodgers

Today’s high five goes to Elton John, probably the most successful musician of the 1970s. At the height of his fame, he performed at Dodger Stadium while wearing a Dodgers uniform. What a party that must have been. I love those photos.

How successful were the Dodgers in the 1970s? Very. The Bums played in the World Series in 1974, 1977 and 1978. They were the only National League team that could keep pace with the Big Red Machine, preventing the Reds from becoming a full-blown dynasty.

Chillin’ out

When it’s zero degrees outside, there’s nothing better than staying inside and having a squeeze in the recliner with my best little buddy.

Maisa is spending the morning writing in her “diary” that she got from Santa.

A good day so far

I had an exceptionally challenging day at the office yesterday, so I was glad to be able to spend a lot of time with Maisa today.

Dominoes, Operation and library books (all 13 of them!) were our main activities.
