Finishing strong

The Dodgers began 2012 with a bang, and they’re finishing the year with a flourish.

Los Angeles won its fifth straight game today, completing a sweep of the Rockies at Dodger Stadium.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals beat Washington — so the Dodgers still trail St. Louis by two games with three games remaining.

It’ll take a miracle to catch the Redbirds, but there’s always hope. I’d love to at least make Cardinal fans squirm a little bit.

Be like Dad

My Dad, the best man I ever knew, died two years ago.

Every day I’m proud and amazed at how Dad lived his life. The world needs more people like him.

Here are some of the things I liked best about my Dad…

  • He never lost his temper.
  • He treated everyone with respect.
  • He smiled a lot.
  • He was very intelligent.
  • He never argued with my Mom (and vice versa).
  • He had the best work ethic in the country.
  • He did not judge people.
  • He never used profanity or violence.
  • He had a great sense of humor and was an excellent impersonator.
  • He was a gentle man.

Dad holds Maisa in September 2008.

L.A. Times columnist gets it right

T.J. Simers of the L.A. Times nailed it this morning — the Dodgers’ late-season collapse started the night Matt Kemp collided with the center-field wall in Denver.

MVP! MVP! MVP!

The worst thing about living in the Des Moines area is that I’m three hours from the best Mom anyone could ever have.

Today’s tip of the cap goes to my Mom, a real-life MVP (most valuable parent).
