Colorado trip

29 Aug

I’m a guy who really enjoys going to work, and I love my daily routine at home and at the office.

So the end of a fun vacation always gives me a really strange sensation. I don’t know how to feel. I’m all out of sorts.

The trip we took to Colorado was among my favorite vacations ever. Here is a rundown of each day (photos to come later in the week)…

WEDNESDAY: The trip was preceded by a day at Gramma and Grampa’s farm and “Taco Night” at the Klub Haus in Westphalia. Back at the farm, I watched the Dodgers get swept by the Giants on Gramma’s computer.

THURSDAY: Flew out of Omaha and arrived in Denver around 3 p.m. My sister Jayne and nephew Brett were there to meet us and loaned us their truck for the week. Jayne and Brett drove back to the mountains and we drove south to Pueblo, where Jill’s aunt and uncle and cousins live. We visited for a while on their gorgeous back porch and got to know Jill’s cousin’s newborn twins a little. Her uncle, hearing that I am a baseball nut, brought me to his neighbor’s house, where I walked through an impressive collection of baseball memorabilia. The guy had autographs of every Hall of Famer you could think of.

FRIDAY: Lunch on Pueblo’s river walk, followed by a historic tour of the area. Later Jill’s uncle gave Grampa and me a ride through the city to point out the key attractions. Jill and I joined her cousin and cousin-in-law that night at a Colorado State Fair-related function.

SATURDAY: An awesome morning drive through the mountains from Pueblo to Silverthorne. We briefly stopped at the Royal Gorge for a look at the big bridge and at Breckenridge to eat. Once we got to Jayne and Jeff’s amazing log-cabin house, we visited and tossed bags and started a campfire in their backyard. Maisa helped Jeff make S’mores. Maisa was so happy to play with little Savannah, Ashley’s daughter.

SUNDAY: This was a memorable day. Drove to nearby Keystone for kid-friendly activities and lunch. Maisa and I climbed the mountain in a chairlift, came down the mountain in a gondola, and drove a paddleboat on a nearby pond, feeding hungry ducks and fish as we paddled. Jill shopped at the Outlets at Silverthorne and found unbelievable bargains to take home. Sunday night was filled with great food, lots of visiting, cocktails and poker with Jayne and Jeff and all of their kids.

MONDAY: Made the 90-minute drive to Denver, checked into our hotel near the airport and then drove downtown to watch the Dodgers take batting practice at beautiful Coors Field. We stood right behind the Dodger dugout and exchanged greetings with Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Adrian Gonzalez, Kenley Jansen, Juan Uribe and coaches Mickey Hatcher and Davey Lopes. Juan Uribe gave Maisa a ball to take home. 🙂 Team photographer John SooHoo loved my “Scully Forever” T-shirt honoring the Dodgers’ longtime broadcaster and snapped a few images of me and Maisa. Not sure if he’ll use them on or not. The game itself was fun but frustrating. The Dodgers trailed 1-0 and 2-0 for most of the game, but the Rockies scored seven runs in the eighth inning to make it a laugher. Jilll and Maisa and Gramma and Grampa enjoyed the experience, though, so I’m very thankful for that.

TUESDAY: Lunch in Council Bluffs on the way home. Back home in Ankeny by 6 p.m. for four loads of laundry. 🙂
