Bobcats’ state run ends

27 Jul

My alma mater, Western Dubuque, is trailing 10-2 in the state semifinals. The Bobcats’ state tournament run will end today.

Another good season for W.D., a school that has been a regular state tournament participant in recent years after a few decades’ worth of mediocrity.

I’ll always believe that Dubuque County is the state’s best baseball county. Between Dyersville Beckman, Cascade, Wahlert, Hempstead, Senior and Western Dubuque, you’re talking about loads of talent each and every year.

And no other county has a more established or competitive semi-pro baseball circuit.

I’ve always said if you pooled the best players from Cascade, Beckman and Western Dubuque and created a Class 4-A team coached by Wahlert’s Jerry Roling (recently named the national coach of the year, I might add), you would win the state tournament every season.
