Looking for some good karma from Randy Newman

One of the best things about The Dodger Stadium Experience is listening to Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.” after the Dodgers win.

(They don’t play the song if the home team loses, which is just as well).

Since we’ve lost two in a row at home to the Brewers — that makes four losses in five games against Milwaukee this year — I figured it wouldn’t hurt to devote today’s blog post to Randy Newman and his ode to the Southern California lifestyle. We need some good karma.

My favorite SI issue ever

Sports Illustrated put its focus on L.A. sports in its most recent issue. The news hook was that the Dodgers are in first place, the Kings are headed to the Stanley Cup Finals, and the Lakers and Clippers were in the NBA playoffs.

No one does sports visuals better than Sports Illustrated, and three of their images just blew me away …

COVER PHOTO: Lakers legend/Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson goofs around with Dodgers superstar Matt Kemp at Chavez Ravine.

INSIDE TWO-PAGE SPREAD: This photo illustration just knocked off my socks off. The magazine designers cut the Staples Center floor in three images — a Clippers game, a Kings game and Lakers game. Also, in the scoreboard video image above the court, the page designer placed a photo of a game being held at Dodger Stadium. I absolutely LOVE this photo illustration.

TABLE OF CONTENTS PAGE: This photo is my favorite one of all. I think Los Angeles is one of the most beautiful cities in the world at night, and this image captures my imagination. At the bottom of the image is Staples Center and the downtown skyscrapers. At the top left of the photo you can see the lights of Dodger Stadium — that magnificent ballpark built into a hilltop. I had never seen a photo like this before.

A gift from that big Dodger fan in the sky

Catcher A.J. Ellis has been nothing short of a gift from the heavens for the Dodgers.

A career minor-leaguer, Ellis has caught fire this year. He’s hitting .317 with a spectacular .442 on-base percentage. Ellis also has thrown out 16-of-35 would-be base stealers — a superb 46 percent success rate for the Dodger catcher.

Last night, one inning after I turned off the TV in disgust, Ellis hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to beat Houston 6-3.

To have a season like the Dodgers are enjoying, you need a bunch of guys having career years. A.J. Ellis’ career year is likely to earn him a trip to theĀ All-Star Game.

‘I wanna be a firefighter when I grow up’

That’s what Maisa said to me midway through Thursday’s tour of the Ankeny Fire Department. My heart just melted. She was completely enthralled with everything the firemen were saying.

Maisa stands next to a big firetruck in Ankeny on Thursday.

Where did those 10 years go?

Ten years ago yesterday, the Dodgers’ Shawn Green went 6-for-6 with four home runs in a game at Milwaukee.
