Bobcats to state tournament

They must have done something to the water supply in Dubuque County.

When I was growing up, the state tournament seemed like a fairy-tale land to students at Western Dubuque High School. My alma mater never made it to the elite eight in anything, much less big sports like football and basketball and baseball.

Since I graduated 17 years ago, W.D. has changed its ways. The Bobcats won the state football title and the state basketball title in 2001. They’ve been to state in baseball a time or two, and now they’re back at state for boys’ basketball.

Story Time with Gramma

Gramma B. went to the library with Maisa and me today. They went to Story Time hour, freeing me up to look at books and videos.

The Ankeny library was a beehive of activity today, as it is most mornings. I hope people realize how good an investment libraries are. I can’t think of many things more important than reading.

And I hope people who work in libraries are proud of what they do — they should be.

Oscar Night

Jill and I watched the Academy Award presentations tonight. I really enjoy the show each year, even though I don’t get to see many films these days.

“The Artist” won all kinds of awards. It’s a throwback movie — silent, black and white, and filmed entirely in Los Angeles.

As a throwback guy, I can’t wait to see it.

The Braun Decision

I think baseball is in trouble again now that Ryan Braun has beaten the system on a technicality.

I worry that this is the Pandora’s Box that leads to baseball being overrun again by steroids.

I hope I’m wrong.

++++++++++++

I don’t want to go back to the day of guys hitting 60 or 70 home runs every year. I don’t want to go back to the days when 3.80 was a really good earned-run average.

Baseball is just getting back to a sane state of existence — where a 3-2 game is more common than an 8-7 game.

I hope Braun is the last guy to beat the system. Baseball needs an ironclad, impenetrable anti-drug program — even if it means some innocent guys are found guilty.

Oh, my aching feet

My progression to “Old Man Status” continues.

I recently started wearing comfortable tennis shoes to and from work each day. When I get to my desk, I change into my dress shoes. When I leave for the night, I put my tennies back on.

I had noticed over the last year or so that my feet ached a bit by the time I completed the 8-block trek from parking ramp to office.

I’m glad to report that the tennis shoes have really helped.
