Weekend in Shelby County

Jill, Maisa and I spent an enjoyable Christmas weekend at Gramma and Grampa B’s farm. Lots of fun, lots of good memories.

Maisa had a blast playing with her cousins, as well as Mr. Fluff the cat and Cooper the dog. Maisa was awake from 8 a.m. to almost 10 p.m. on Christmas Day. She didn’t have time to take a nap because of all the activity in the house.

Perhaps the best memory of all was watching “Christmas Vacation.” One laugh after another. It’s become a great tradition in Jill’s family.

As usual, I received more Christmas gifts this year than I deserved. They’re all nice things that I definitely can use.

Maisa received enough books and toys and clothes to last her till next Christmas. 🙂 She gets so excited every time she opens a gift. She really appreciates the moment for a 3-year-old. It’s neat to watch.

Thanks to all who took the time and spent the money to get something for Jill, Maisa or myself. Much appreciated.

Happy birthday to me

You know that old saying, “You should do something special on your birthday”? Well, I hardly ever heed that advice. Today, however, I actually did something different — I went to the movie theater by myself.

When I first moved to Des Moines, I would go to the cinema unattended almost every week. Saw a lot of movies when I was the only person in the theater. It’s kinda fun to have the whole place to yourself.

Tonight, there was one other guy watching George Clooney’s “The Descendants” at the Fleur Cinema in south Des Moines. He was seated about 10 rows behind me. I was directly in the middle of the room. Perfect view, perfect sound. 🙂

The film, directed by Alexander Payne (“Sideways”), was well-done. All of Clooney’s films are well-done. This one was a little on the depressing side, but that’s OK. I’ll give it 3 stars out of 5.

The Beach Boys turn 50 next year

The Beach Boys are getting back together for a 50th anniversary tour in 2012.

I’m very excited about this. If they come anywhere near Des Moines, I would love to attend their concert.

Musical genius Brian Wilson has been estranged from the rest of the Boys for many years. I have a DVD of their last concert together — 1980 in London. At long last, Brian has decided to tour with Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston again. This is really cool news.

This is my favorite Beach Boys song…

A cool song by one of America’s coolest cats

This is my favorite Dean Martin song. Can’t you just picture him singing it on his bar stool?

What’s the point?

I haven’t traveled to all 99 of my state’s counties, but the Iowa that professor Stephen Bloom wrote about certainly isn’t the Iowa that I’ve grown up with.

Bloom teaches at the University of Iowa. I never took his class, but I know people who did, and some of them say he is probably the best professor they ever had. From what I hear, he’s brilliant.

But what’s the point of trashing the state of Iowa so thoroughly, as Bloom did in the Atlantic magazine? I don’t quite understand his motives.
