Matt Kemp is making a serious final-week push for the National League MVP. He was 4-for-5 tonight with a homer and three doubles.

Kemp’s two-run homer in the eighth inning was his 36th, second-best in the NL. He scored three times to extend his NL lead to 109 runs and 118 RBIs.

Dodgers are back over .500 at 78-77.

Kemp is a legitimate contender for the NL’s Triple Crown. I can’t remember the last batter who even had a chance going into the final six games of the season. I’m stealing these stats from the Dodger Thoughts blog:

NL batting average leaders
.330 Ryan Braun
.329 Jose Reyes
.326 Matt Kemp

NL home run leaders
37 Albert Pujols
36 Matt Kemp
35 Dan Uggla

NL runs batted in leaders
118 Matt Kemp
113 Ryan Howard
112 Prince Fielder

Did you see the Cardinals’ meltdown in the ninth inning today? A thing of beauty. Their wild-card deficit went from one game to two games in the blink of an eye.

Tampa Bay won tonight, so the Rays are two games behind Boston again. The Rays have so much young talent, it’s just disgusting. Tonight Matt Moore fanned 11 Yankees in five innings — in his first major-league start.
